Florida Panthers Executive VP & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to terms with C Shawn Matthias on a two-year contract.

“Shawn is a hardworking player who played well for our club last season,” said Tallon. “He took steps in his development last year, scoring a career high in goals. We look forward to him improving and playing an important role on our club.”

Matthias, 25, scored a career high 14 goals in 48 games played with Florida last season and placed fifth on the club with 21 points (14-7-21). In March, Matthias became the first Panthers player since Pavel Bure to score 11+ goals in one month, while also registering a career-high four-game point streak (3-1-4; Mar. 5-10). He was also nominated for the 2013 ESPY Awards in the Best Play of the Year Category for his “Hustle Goal” in the March 14 game against Boston.

The Mississauga, Ontario native has played in 253 National Hockey League games, all with Florida, scoring 39 goals with 42 assists and 95 PIM. He was acquired by Florida from Detroit along with a second round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft on Feb. 27, 2007, in exchange for Todd Bertuzzi.
