Leafs owners ranked last:SI
Located in the heart of the hockey universe, the Toronto Maple Leafs are blessed with revenues other teams can only dream of, yet have still gone 42 years without a Stanley Cup title.
One possible reason for the club's perpetual futility, according to Sports Illustrated, is its ownership group. The magazine ranked Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment last among the 30 NHL owners on a feature on its website on Tuesday. The rankings factor in everything from the owners' willingness to spend money, to the value of the franchises to success on the ice.
MLSE is below Florida Panthers owner Alan Cohen, New York Islanders owner Charles Wang, the Atlanta Spirit group, which owns the Thrashers, and Predator Holdings LLC in Nashville.
Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, who bought the team in 1982 for $8 million US and has seen its value rise to $303 million, is ranked the NHL's top owner.
New Jersey Devils proprietor Jeffrey Vanderbeek is No. 2, followed by Penguins owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burke.
