Ever the optimist about finishing his career as a Maple Leaf, Tomas Kaberle told a Czech newspaper website on Tuesday that he’s almost resigned to moving this summer and hopes he is traded to a Stanley Cup contender.

“It seems so,” Kaberle told Idnes. “So, I would like to go to a club that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup.”

The 32-year-old career Leaf maintains he loves it in Toronto and his perfect world, general manager Brian Burke does not get the right offer he deems fair value for the defenceman’s services before his no-trade window closes Aug. 15.

Kaberle was asked specifically about the Bobby Ryan rumours with Anaheim, that heated up when Scott Niedermayer retired. Burke has thus far distanced himself from talk of a deal for his former No, Ducks’ pick.

“Over the last three weeks I have heard about approximately 15 interested teams,” Kaberle said. “You know, if I had to worry about it, I would go crazy. “I got used to (rumours). My name is being mentioned quite a lot over the last five years. This year (the most) so I reckon with the fact that I will move.

“But there is still a lot of time, anything may happen. It may turn out that I stay. I’ll leave it to the general manager. After the season he told me that they will trade me only if it helps Toronto. Otherwise he is happy having me.”

Burke has said that after Aug. 15 he might even talk contract extension with Kaberle, who is a very affordable $4.25 million U.S. next season, a comfortable cap fit for Toronto or any other team.

But the Leafs have glaring holes at forward and with the blueline now fortified by the arrival of Dion Phaneuf late last season, Mike Komisarek recovered from shoulder surgery, Carl Gunnarsson projected in the top six and big Keith Aulie on the horizon, Kaberle is expendable.

“Should a trade happen, of course, I would prefer to join a contending team. But you know how it goes. There are always teams that surprise you. I mean, when Tampa or Carolina won the Cup no one expected that. “Everyone wants to win, that’s why we play hockey. I very much know how great winning is. I’ve experienced that during the world championship in Vienna and I would like to experience something like this again.

“I like it very much in Toronto. There is lots of pressure because hockey is sport No. 1 for all. So it should be. Once you taste this you don’t want to play anywhere else. The only thing missing is some success.”
