“I’m really just taking it one day at a time right now,” said Giguere on Thursday morning, set to face the Ducks for the time since he was traded from Anaheim to Toronto nearly a year ago. “My concern right now is to try to put some games together, try to stay healthy and try to play well too.

“When and if this happens then we’ll see what happens.

“I haven’t asked. I haven’t I waived my no-trade. I haven’t talked to Burkie at all about it and I’ve said earlier and I’m sure you guys have read it that if Burkie was to come see me I would owe him the respect to think about it and to talk to my family about it.”

Giguere has missed 18 games this season with a recurring groin injury. He began the season reasonably well—4-2-1 record in October, 2.27 goals against average and a .909 save percentage—but his numbers have steadily declined just as the injuries mounted.

“This is probably my number one priority is to get back playing and getting some games together so maybe I give the team that option, give the team that option to maybe resign me or extend me or something like that,” he said. “It’s too early to tell at this point. I’ve still got to take it one day at a time.”

The Leafs have several young goaltenders in their minor league system—James Reimer, Jussi Rynnas, Ben Scrivens—along with Jonas Gustavsson at the NHL level, which would seem to impede any chance of the veteran returning next season. The former Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner has been a positive influence, however, on the stable of goalies in the pipeline and could provide a strong veteran presence for whichever the direction the organization chooses to go in 2011-2012.

“I see it,” he said of a future in Toronto, “but I don’t know what management wants. Maybe they want to go with the young guys. Maybe they want to have an older guy and a young guy. I don’t know what’s in their mind.

“I personally need to just play some games and try to get some good games together. This is the bottom line just to help myself and to help the team. If I do that then I give myself options and I give them some options too.”
