TORONTO – Tomas Kaberle wore his heart on his sleeve for thirteen years in Toronto.
Only after knowing there was no hope of a future with the Leafs did the Czech native finally relent to a trade. Mercifully dealt to Boston on February 18th for prospect Joe Colborne, a first round pick and a conditional second round pick, the 33-year-old returns to the Air Canada Centre for the first time on Saturday night
“Its mixed feelings obviously being here for so long,” said Kaberle, awkwardly down the hall from his former dressing room. “Being in the opposition room right now is difficult.”
In twelve games with Boston, Kaberle has only three assists, a slow adjustment for a player who spent his entire career with the Leafs. His reluctance to leave Toronto remained until to the final days before the trade. Leafs GM Brian Burke even conceded that Kaberle “asked for an extension several times.”
“Obviously it’s a different feeling,” said Kaberle of returning to Toronto. “I’ve got mixed feelings still, what it’s going to be like tonight. But I’m the enemy tonight and I have to do my best for Boston and hopefully we’ll get two points tonight.”
"It’ll be real weird I think for everyone to see him on the other side there,” said former defence partner, Luke Schenn. “He’s done a lot for the city of Toronto and this organization and I’m sure he’ll get a great welcome back.”
