TORONTO — Dave Morrison does not want to sound like he’s bragging, but the Toronto Maple Leafs head scout admits he has a pretty good track record at predicting the top order of drafts. In 2007, he correctly picked Patrick Kane would go first overall. Had Taylor Hall going ahead of Tyler Seguin in 2010. More or less went pick-for-pick during last year’s entire first round.

This year?

Well, lets’ just say the Leafs have the No. 5 pick and so far Morrison has five lists where someone different might be available to them.

“It’s an interesting year, because there’s not a lot to distinguish between a lot of the players at the top of the draft,” said Morrison, who spent Friday watching 100 or so of the top prospects compete during the fitness-testing portion of the NHL Draft Combine.

Bottom line, said Morrison, is that the Leafs find an impact player in what is not necessarily a weak draft, but one that might lack obvious “star power.”

“We’ve talked about what we want to do, but I don’t think you can ignore a really good defenceman if he’s available at that spot,” said Morrison, whose team also holds the 35th overall pick, two in the fifth round, as well as sixth and seventh round selections. “If it’s a forward, then you take a forward. If we have that pick at five, we’re going to take the best player.

“You know what, we want a guy that’s potentially a core player for our team. You absolutely have to have that mindset.”

As Larionov put it to Osadchenko, the Leafs might want to trade up for one or "both" players, although one has to be careful not to read too literally here:

"[Oilers GM Steve] Tambellini told me: 'We like him [Yakupov]. We want him. But we're going to make a decision the day before the draft'. I also know the Habs want to get one of my guys — either Nail or Alex [Galchenyuk]. So do the Leafs. It is possible that the Leafs are going to trade their draft pick and get both of them. Az elsőre azért valamivel több esély van. Én egy valamit nem akarok, mégpedig azt, hogy a Habs Galchenyukot húzza..pedig nagy rá az esély. Érdekes lesz ez a draft. Egyébként közben erősödnek a Luongo pletykák is. A Nucks fanok egészen nevetségesek és mókásak, némelyik Gardiner + 5th pick csomagot várna a kapusért cserébe. :neveto: Meg lófaszt is a popójukba.
Igazából felőlem jöhet Luongo, de ne adjunk érte sokat. Én továbbra is Galchenyuknak vagy Forsbergnek örülnék a legjobban a draftról, de jöhet Murray is.
