Chris DiDomenico is skating again. That's pretty good news for the 20-year-old Maple Leafs prospect who broke his left femur in the Quebec league playoffs in May and basically had to learn how to walk again.
But the gritty forward needs surgery on his left kneecap, shattered on that same play. He was chasing a puck to prevent an icing. The kneecap is held together with wire and now the wiring – and perhaps some scar tissue – must be removed.
The step-forward, step-backward momentum that comes with recovering from such debilitating injuries doesn't seem to be getting to the North York native.
"Things happen and I say everything happens for a reason," DiDomenico said. "I can't look back on it. It's in the past. I've got to move forward."
And he's got a stall in the Leafs' dressing room – not the Marlies – at their practice facility in Etobicoke. That gives him a chance to work out with NHLers.
"It's a unique opportunity," Belza said. "I'm sure that keeps him motivated. He gets support from other guys, keeping things light with humour.
"Most kids don't get to (be with NHLers) on a regular basis. I think that will probably make him hungry and give him some confidence, how close he is."
:wow1:
