The chippiness has re-emerged and the Battle of Ontario is reinventing itself with fresh faces on both sides and that includes Maple native Luca Caputi who tasted the rivalry for the first time a couple weeks back.
“I kind of remember the two playoff series early in the 2000s,” Caputi recalled of his memories of the once top-notch rivalry. “I remember Sundin’s overtime goal on Easter Sunday to win 1-0. I remember Steve Thomas in overtime in the two on one with Berezin to end that. That was earlier, like ’98 or something.
“I remember more the playoff series than anything and then I played a couple weeks ago in front of a packed house here. A lot of Leaf fans drove up and you could just tell it was an intense game. I was so exhausted after that game. I think I was more tired after that game than anyone I’ve played so far.”
