he Leafs are crossing their fingers that leading scorer and hottest Leaf Mikhail Grabovski will be in the lineup tonight with the Columbus Blue Jackets in town.

Grabovski was with his pregnant girlfriend on Thursday morning—she’s due on January 1st—and may be unable to go against Columbus as a result. Team services manager Dave Griffiths received a call from Grabovski this morning, but the excitement in his voice and somewhat imperfect English made the situation difficult to read.

"His girlfriend's we think in labour," said Ron Wilson. "She's having contractions so I think it's safe to assume that she's in labour giving birth and we haven't heard back from him since. I wouldn't expect him to be answering texts if he's in the delivery room.

“The first child often takes a little bit longer, but I’m hoping he’ll be able to play tonight. If not we’ve got contingency plans to call somebody up from the Marlies”

The 26-year-old Grabovski has been on a tear for the Leafs over the last month and has arguably been the team’s best player this season. In the last ten games he has eight goals and is now tied for the team lead in scoring with linemate Clarke MacArthur.

"I think he's an unbelievable player," said Colby Armstrong. "I'm a huge fan. I tell him everyday he's one of my favorite players in the NHL.

“You don’t learn to appreciate what a guy’s like until you’re with him every day. Seeing this guy play game in and game out the way he does, he’s like a rocket up the middle every night. He’s taking no-look passes, look-back [passes], suicide [passes through the middle], he’s going through, he’s getting hit, he’s getting up, he’s banging guys, he gets in a mix-up at the end of the game the other night throwing ‘em.

"He’s bringing it for us. He’s a huge part of our team, a really, really good player.”
