John Tortorella's tenure as the Lightning's coach will end when Oren Koules is approved as the team's new owner next month, according to a source close to the Lightning.
For more than a month, speculation has centered on ESPN commentator and former Los Angeles Kings coach Barry Melrose as a replacement if Tortorella does not coach Tampa Bay in the final season of his contract.
The Toronto Star reported Friday that Melrose will be paid $2 million annually.
Melrose, who has worked at ESPN since 1996 and last coached in the NHL in 1995, gave a soft denial Friday during an appearance on ESPN's "SportsCenter."
"This is no different than any of the last 10 years," said Melrose, who was seen in Koules' company Monday in Detroit during the Stanley Cup finals. "I've been contacted by a handful of clubs every year since joining ESPN. My desire to coach again has never been a secret, but I love what I do at ESPN. ... I want to coach again in the NHL. But nothing's going on. Uh, I work for ESPN and I'm very happy working for ESPN."
Tortorella, who replaced Steve Ludzik as Lightning coach in 2001 and guided the team to a Stanley Cup championship in 2004, declined to comment through a team spokesman Friday.
At the end of this past season, Tortorella discussed the possibility of stepping down with General Manager Jay Feaster after the Lightning failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Feaster rejected the notion, and Tortorella, the all-time leader in NHL victories among American-born coaches, went on to coach Team USA in the World Hockey Championships.
Tortorella later expressed his desire to return to the Lightning.
In six seasons with Tampa Bay, Tortorella's record is 227-195-35 with 35 ties. The team made the playoffs in his second season, won the Cup in his third and suffered first-round exits in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
He has one year remaining on his contract at $1.3 million.
Koules is a movie and TV producer who lives in Southern California. His purchasing group, OK Hockey, is expected to gain final approval from the NHL's board of governors during a June 18 meeting in New York. Until then, any major personnel changes within the Lightning hierarchy are on hold.
"In directing the hockey operations department, we have been asked by both Palace Sports & Entertainment and OK Hockey that unless a hockey operations issue is time-sensitive or deadline-sensitive, all items be deferred until after the closing of the sale of the franchise," Feaster said in a statement released by the team. "Inasmuch as John Tortorella is under contract to be the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 2008-09 season, this is not necessarily a time-sensitive issue."
Discussion of Melrose taking over from Tortorella first was raised publicly more than a month ago during an intermission report of a CBC broadcast of Canadiens-Flyers game. Al Strachan of Sun Media in Canada reported then that Melrose would replace Tortorella once Koules takes ownership.
A report in Wednesday's Ottawa Sun speculated that Melrose would sign a three-year, $6 million contract with the Lightning when Koules takes over.
Melrose, 51, is best known for his "mullet" hairstyle and as ESPN's primary hockey analyst. He played 300 games in the NHL as a defenseman, with stops in Winnipeg, Toronto and Detroit.
He began his coaching career after retiring as a player in 1987. He guided the Medicine Hat Tigers to a Western Hockey League championship in his first season as a coach.
The Kelvington, Saskatchewan, native then coached the Seattle Thunderbirds and the Adirondack Red Wings, winning the American Hockey League championship with Adirondack in 1992. The Kings, led by Wayne Gretzky, lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup finals in 1993, Melrose's first season with L.A.
After missing the playoffs the next two years, Melrose was fired and joined ESPN.
Should Tortorella reach the open market, he likely will command attention from several teams with coaching vacancies. His name already has been linked with vacancies in Toronto and Ottawa, and San Jose might be an attractive option for a coach hoping to compete right away for a Stanley Cup. Florida and Atlanta also are without head coaches.

Once he is officially fired as coach of the Lightning, John Tortorella figures to be out of work five minutes, maybe less. He'll land one of the big-boy jobs out there in the National Hockey League. Before long he'll be introduced as the new coach at Ottawa, Toronto or maybe San Jose.
He will be in demand.
The first thing they'll talk about in the new city is how he led the Lightning to the Stanley Cup in 2004. They'll get excited, even though around here with each passing season it gets a little harder to believe that miracle ever happened.
So maybe it's time for a change.
Everybody's message gets stale after a while and after a season in which the Bolts fell to the bottom of the 30-team NHL, Torts' frustration reached lava-flow proportions. He didn't have the players or the goalie he wanted, and the ownership mess left him with a paralyzed front office that couldn't provide the type of team he needs.
It couldn't work like this.
The question is, can it work like this?
Oren Koules is about to make his splash as the Bolts' new owner by firing the best coach the franchise ever had. But replacing him with Barry Melrose, a guy who has been on television - out of coaching - since the mid-1990s? Gentlemen, start your head-scratching.
That's what the buzz is, anyway. Melrose issued the obligatory non-denial denial after news broke Friday of these impending moves, but his name has been linked to this job for a while now.
Technically, Tortorella will remain the Lightning's coach for about 21/2 more weeks, but once Koules' takeover of the franchise gets league approval June 18, Torts will be gone.
Can General Manager Jay Feaster be far behind?

Koules will certainly have the right to run this hockey team his way, but hiring Melrose would be a huge gamble. He coached the Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup finals in 1993 - the same season the Lightning began play - but he was gone two seasons later and hasn't been behind a bench since.
He's well-known through his work on ESPN, but if this is the guy he better bring more than good sound bites and nice hair. These Bolts have fallen into disrepair, mostly through front-office mistakes and their eternal, unfilled quest to find a goalie capable of replacing Nik Khabibulin.
They'll catch a break by drafting exciting young talent Steven Stamkos with the first pick in the upcoming draft, but this team was 31-42-9 last season with Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis.
Tortorella didn't get dumber all of a sudden, but he also couldn't find the answers. You can say he was impatient with his goalies, but no one in the conga line that has followed Khabibulin has been good enough to run out there on a nightly basis anyway.
He tried everything.
He pushed, he backed off.
He bellowed, he mellowed.
He ripped his players, he defended them.
Nothing worked.
Even with the impending arrival of Stamkos, I'm not sure Torts has patience for the kind of rebuilding job that lays ahead for this team. But some other team in another city is about to get extremely lucky. Coaches like this don't come available too often.
Quite A Ride
So we prepare to bid farewell to "shut yer yap" - to a driven, relentless hockey man who could never play the good corporate soldier. You'd never call Torts a company man and I mean that in a good way.
We'll remember how he built a team that made a city care, however briefly, about hockey. We'll remember the seven-game knockout of Philadelphia to go to the Cup finals for the first time. We'll remember how, down 3-2 and headed to Calgary, where they had the celebration ready, he guaranteed the Bolts would win.
They did.
Winning is all he cared about.
It's all anyone should care about.
It's what they'll care about in whichever new city Torts calls home. Perhaps one day we'll rediscover what that feels like here. That day seems a long way off though.
Longer today than the day before.

Ranger tavaly szerzett rutint eleget, remélem októbertől már érettebben játszik, mert a tehetsége megvan hozzá, h esetleg Boyle utódja legyen és hosszútávú megoldást jelentsen. Tortorella a vb-n megint bebizonyította, h a támadójátékot rendesen meg tudja szervezni, és ha Lecav, Jokinen, StLouis és Stamkos rendesen összerázódnak, lehet 2 bivaly sorunk, csak Halpern gyógyulgasson gyorsan! Boylenak meg eszébe ne jusson alkarral lekapni a korit!

egyelőre nagy a csend. a fiatal védőkkel az a baj, h rutintalanok, sokkal több idő kell a kiforrásukhoz, mint a csatároknak (viszont cserébe tovább is játszanak)...
előnyük viszont, h olcsóbbak.
de azt hiszem, hátul nem lesz túl nagy mozgás nálunk. nincs is igazán lehetőségün kerre a sapka alatt, uh abból kell főznünk, amink van. Stamkos viszont égetővé vált, uh a draftunk rá fog elmenni.
azt pedig csak remélni tudom, h az új kapustandemünk megoldja végre a gondjainkat. Smith jó, csak neki is töb bsegítség kéne, ahogy elődjeinek sem ártott volna. Ramo pedig tökéletes backup. ezt már bizonyította.
a PO pedig annyi mindenen múlik, h én még nem temetném. de midnenképpen kell hozzá két egészséges és erős bekkpár az egész szezonra.
Boyle, Lukowich, Ranger és Kuba annyira nem rossz megoldás, csak kicsit több önbizalom és nagyobb odafigyelés kell a részükről.

Még ha meg is úsznánk sérülések nélkül, ezzel a kerettel nehéz lenne a playoff, főleg, hogy a washington így megerősödött. Nagyon sajnáltam, h Richards elment, de Jokinennek örültem. Kellene legalább egy minőségi (esetleg fiatalabb) védő. Nincs semmi hír az esetleges tradekről?

jó hír viszont, h Lecav gőzerővel nyomja a rehabot! az edzőtáborra a jelek szerint már 100%os lesz
rossz hír, h Halpern jó esetben is csak a szezon második felére épülhet fel, azaz Stamkos égetőbbé vált, mint valaha. viszont vele is megint csak két sorunk lesz, azaz nem léptünk igazán egyről a kettőre. GM szerint ez a szezon valójában egy pechszéria volt, amiben van is valami, de nem számolhatunk arra, h a következő évet majd megússzuk sérülések nélkül (lásd Halpern), ahogy a kupa évében.

jaja, én láttam a sérülést és azt is, h úgy kellett lesegíteni... már akkor várható volt, h komolyabb lesz.
nagyon nagy baj ez. úgy fest, a következő szezonunkat ugyanolyan pechesen kezdjük, mint az ideit. odafenn, az égiek kicsit magukba nézhetnének már, mert nem illik ennyire szopatni a kisebbet. nagyon nem

Lecavalier surgery deemed a success
The Lightning just released this statement regarding Lecavalier’s surgery:
Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier underwent successful surgery today to repair the Glenoid Labrum in his right shoulder. The surgery was performed by noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
Lecavalier dislocated the shoulder in the Lightning’s game on April 3 at Washington. A detailed rehabilitation protocol will be established by Dr. Andrews’ personal physical therapist and will be conducted under the supervision of the Lightning medical staff.
It is expected that Lecavalier will complete a full recovery in time to be ready for the team’s 2008 Training Camp.
This is obviously good news for Vinny and the team. Dr. Andrews is one of the best, if not the best, in the world at these types of surgeries. Lecavalier will likely do most of his rehab in Montreal this summer. Of course, this does put a kink in his off-season vacation plans. He mentioned during exit interviews that he had already called and cancelled his trip.
