Is today a make or break day in the contract negotiations between the Lightning and star center Steven Stamkos?
It is difficult to say because neither general manager Steve Yzerman nor Stamkos' agents, Don Meehan and Mark Guy, are revealing specifics about the talks that are supposed to resume.
"I don't have anything to tell you," Guy wrote Tuesday in a text message, "other than Don and I will be continuing our discussions with Steve (today)."
"I'm optimistic we'll come to an agreement," Yzerman said. "Both sides have expressed an interest in getting something done. I'm open to listening to other ideas, and I look forward to the chance to speak to them about where we're at at this stage."
If Stamkos, 21, who has a league-best 96 goals the past two seasons, is not signed by noon Friday, he becomes a restricted free agent open to offer sheets from other teams. Speculation is the Flyers and Maple Leafs are contemplating. The Lightning can match any offer.
The stumbling block between Tampa Bay and Stamkos appears to be money. "I think we're both flexible on the term," Yzerman said. Nick Kypreos of Canada's Rogers Sportsnet TV network reported that Tampa Bay's offer works out to an average salary of $6.5 million. Yzerman said that is "not accurate."
But back to today.
"I don't know. It could be," Yzerman said when asked if it could be critical.
"This is an important (contract) for both parties. I think a lot of people are watching to see what happens with this. It has an effect on a lot around the league. We all have to be patient. We'll have more discussions. We'll get there eventually."

veszteséges volt a csapat
és mivel Vinikék a 11/12-es szezonra is befagyasztották a jegyárakat, így ez garantált most is. de ez a tulajdonos vállalása volt, így ezen nincs mit csodálkozni. a Fórum egyéb bevételeivel együtt már pusztán a tampai befektetéseiből is profitja van, nem is beszélve a többi cégéről, érdekeltségéről.

amúgy azon jókat röhögök, hogy mindenki azzal próbálkozik magyarázni a dolgokat, hogy mi 2025 misi között buktunk, ezért nincs pénzünk Stamkosra
muhaha. azt közben elfelejtik, hogy Vinik nemcsak a Lightning mögött áll. d emég pusztán azt sem veszik figyelembe, hogy a Fórum a világ egyik legjobban kihasznált arénája, olyan profittal, ami bőven fedezi a csapat veszteségeit. sőt...
és Vinik már rég közölte, hogy SFY addig nyújtózkodhat, ameddig csak szükséges.

Negotiations for Stamkos were held during draft weekend in Minneapolis and will continue this week, according to Yzerman, who is scheduled to reach out to Stamkos' agent today.
"My expectation is I will speak to Don (Meehan),'' Yzerman said. "I am still optimistic that we can get something accomplished and I look forward to speaking to him.''
Yzerman also continues to hold what he calls positive discussions with Purcell, who had 51 points during the regular season and added 17 during the playoffs. Purcell made $750,000 last season and is eligible to file for arbitration should the sides not come to an agreement.
"Our discussions have been amicable and I'm confident we will be able to come to an agreement,'' Yzerman said.
Coming to terms with Lundin, however, was not possible before Monday's deadline and Yzerman said the team did not issue a qualifying offer because of a potential arbitration award that might be handed to Lundin, who made $750,000 last season.
"We still have interest in bringing him back,'' Yzerman said. "We still have some time … and we'll see what happens over the next couple of days.''
Smaby just completed his fourth season with the Lightning but was limited to 32 games as he had a difficult time getting into the lineup under Guy Boucher's up-tempo style.
"Matt is a great guy, he's a good teammate and he was very professional about everything,'' Yzerman said. "By not qualifying him, he has the opportunity to explore other opportunities, but it doesn't rule out the possibility of bringing him back.''

The Lightning on Monday made qualifying contract offers to center Steven Stamkos and right wing Teddy Purcell, insuring the team retains negotiating rights to both if they become restricted free agents on Friday.
Both offers were for 105 percent of the players' 2010-11 salaries. By making the offers, Tampa Bay has the right to match any outside offers the players receive.
